I have been a Lonely Planet user for years in multiple countries. There will always be subjective differences between favorite restaurants, hotels, etc. What I was disappointed in in this guide was the basics that were incorrect. Even the country map did not match up at the binding so that a section of the country was just missing. I checked in with other travelers and they also had faulty maps. There were also pieces that were inaccurate in regards to distances and other key information that made me wonder if the authors had truly been to these places. I really enjoyed my travels through Guatemala but would love to edit some of this guide!

The edition I received was published in October 2016. If you want a couple hundred pages listing hotels, restaurants and entertainment spots in regions of Guatemala (something you could more efficiently locate on the internet), maybe this is the guide for you. But if you are interested in history and culture, as a background for your travels, just two dozen pages at the back of the book are all you are offered. The only photographs appear in the introduction, where a "top 15" list of areas to visit, three brief itineraries, and some basics about weather and wardrobe are published. Somehow, I expected more of a Lonely Planet guide, especially for $24.99 retail.

Lonely Planet has steadily decreased in quality over the decades. It used to be a genuine backpacker's guide that took you to remote, offbeat, non-mainstream places where you can still find an authentic slice of life away from the noise and chaos of modern life. But since changing owners it's just another whore of capitalism--digging up people's wallets and appealing to the lowest common denominator in taste and activities. If you're looking for a real backpacker's experience this is not the guide for you.

Lonely planet book itself: The book was ok for a general overview of each area, but I found that the listings were not very comprehensive and the descriptions not particularly helpful.* Xela has at least 40-50 language schools, but the guide lists only five, and doesn't at least acknowledge that it is not at all a comprehensive list. I found my school by word of mouth. It makes no mention of Adrenalina Tours, a Guatemalan-owned national operation that actually has a fairly strong set of offerings, and has English-speaking staff.* Antigua section did not at all include a number of restaurants that I passed, and did not describe a number of the buildings, nor did it include the hotel (Hotel del Carmen) where I stayed - and this was a fairly sizeable, mid-range hotel.* The Panajachel map does not include many of the narrow side streets that cannot accomodate cars but do accomodate pedestrians and scooters.I had the kindle version, which was also problematic: the index was not very good, and there was no direct way to get to the table of contents. I would suggest, too, that it might be better to walk around with a paper book - it's not very practical to walk around with an expensive e-reader or iPad.

I have been using Lonely Planet to get to know Latin America for many years. The information about hotels/hostels and restaurants is very handy. If I am not happy with what I find, a good night's sleep and a decent breakfast give me the energy to explore other possibilities.I wish that the handicapped/elderly were kept in mind in more travel books. Is the hotel handicapped-friendly, can a wheel chair navigate the sidewalks in Town X, and so forth.

I used Lonely Planet Guatemala to plan a 2 week trip and had a good time. The information in the book was pretty accurate and updated. The descriptions of villages, guesthouses and restaurants were accurate. The part about planning your trip had good suggestions. I would definitly recommend this book for a trip to Guatemala.

Good information that I plan to use on my upcoming trip.

A visit to Antigua was helped a lot by this LP guide. We visited a lot of the places listed, some of which we would not have discovered on our own. LP is always a good companion wherever you go.
