If you want to take your system off-grid or prepare for emergency backup, this ARRL EMCOMM book is a good start. I run my ham radio station on a solar-powered battery bank. You can do the same or other projects like running your coffee pot (which actually takes a large current draw!). This book will help guide you through designing a system with various generation methods and tell you about some things you might not have thought about. It's not a technical manual you'll refer to repeatedly, though. It's a good starting point, not an engineers' technical reference.

This book is a good intro into alternative power supplies for a ham radio station, though the information is applicable to home as well. It covers enough info to get you started and certainly whetted my appetite to learn more about some alternative power supplies. My only complaint was that is was almost a week later then promised.
