An extremely readable book, sadly out of print, which discusses the essential quality of calcium in the soil. The book is nearly 50 years old and he was already declaiming the over-usage of fertilizers, which has continued to the present. Fascinating is the idea that calcium-rich soils often can be calcium poor, because the composition of the soil prevents plant uptake and by continuation diminishes the nutrition and TASTE! of the food we eat. He was a real soil scientist and conducted many experiments and worked with all kinds of farmers. The addition of limestone was the crucial ingredient that he 'rediscovered'. The use of dolomitic limestone and gypsum are both discussed. Overall, he writes with a real sense of humility, rather than hubris, and states that he often learned more from his experiences with farmers than from the (incorrect!) orthodoxy of the academic and government sectors.
