Review

“A fast-paced, satisfying capper to a trilogy that’s sure to enchant fans of adventure-driven fantasy.” ―Kirkus Reviews "A fantasy-filled tale of courage and redemption, revenge and remorse, The Raven God captivates with colorful characters and rich Norse legends" ―Foreword Review "Gorgeously written, The Raven God delivers a fresh, lively fantasy with enough twists and turns to keep a young reader captivated. Sam, Mavery, and Perrin, tasked with saving Odin, make for delightful heroes. Set against magical ships, powerful witches, and determined armies, the three must summon both courage and smarts if they are to reach their goal. In the end, the three discover that the power of friendship is perhaps the greatest weapon of all. A magical read filled with other-worldly beings both good and evil―and always entertaining." ―Jennifer Gooch Hummer, award-winning author of Girl Unmoored and Operation Tenley Praise for The Legends of Orkney Series: "Sam's internal struggles and focus on the dark side of his witch heritage are reminiscent of Anakin Skywalker and will likely appeal to fanboys and fangirls, particularly as he 'must face the darkness inside.' Combined with strong female leads, both heroic and villainous, the ever growing and changing cast of characters has something for everyone. Fantasy, mythology, a touch of romance, and enough sword fights and battles to appease even the most action-hungry make Kalifus Rising a well-rounded, solid choice for those craving a new type of adventure." ―Foreword Reviews FIVE STAR review "Adams is a master of exposition, never letting it slow the narrative by immersing it in rapid-fire dialogue . . . Indelible characters, both good and evil, and a rescue storyline that refuses to dawdle." ―Kirkus Reviews "This series will do well with the Percy Jackson crowd and fans of Norse mythology." ―School Library Journal Featured on Girls' Life Fall Reading List Praise and Awards for the Legends of Orkney series: For The Red Sun: 2016 International Book Awards: Fiction: Young Adult Finalist 2015 USA Best Book Awards: Best Cover Design: Fiction, Winner 2015 USA Best Book Awards: Children's Fiction, Winner Beverly Hills Book Award: Best Juvenile Fiction, Winner IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards: Best New Voice Children's/Young Adult, Silver Medal Readers Favorite Awards Children Preteen: Silver Medal Winner "This fast-moving adventure―the beginning of a trilogy―is sure to appease mythology fans who are outgrowing Percy Jackson's antics and looking for darker, weightier storytelling. VERDICT: A great choice for middle school collections." ―School Library Journal "Percy Jackson meets Norse mythology in this captivating and unique adventure." ―Foreword Reviews (4 stars out of 5) "The Red Sun: Legends of Orkney by Alane Adams is a book that will take children on a roller coaster ride of adventure and fantasy where whimsical and menacing creatures and witches will enthrall readers." ―Readers' Favorite (5 stars out of 5) "This novel may appeal to young readers who have enjoyed other 'chosen one' fantasy stories: It moves along at a speedy clip, and preteens will likely identify with Sam?s anger and frustration with the world . . . it's a high fantasy tale that maintains a quick pace?" ―Kirkus Reviews "The Red Sun is a roller coaster ride of adventure, Norse mythology, magic and mayhem. Between Sam facing awesome villains in the magical realm of Orkney to teachers turning into lizards, I had the best time doing the voiceover for the audiobook. My son loved this series-we read the last one together. Epic ending—Norse mythology—Loki!! So many great hero’s and adventures.

**I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. This doesn’t affect my opinion on the book** And this has spoilers from the second book of the series, Kalifus Rising. The God of Mischief is up to his tricks, and that’s what the book begins with. How Loki killed Baldur, the son of Odin and Frigga. And how that led to the imprisonment of Loki, his wife, Angerboda; and his children, Fenrir, Jormungand and Helva, and I’m sure I got some names wrong, but I’m lazy to go verify them. That is what the prologue is about. And then we go straight to the more recent developments, which also involves Loki released from his underworld prison by Leo, and Odin’s death in the previous book and its consequences. Loki spreads the word to the fire giants and their leader (?) Surt about Odin’s death and now they are out to destroy Orkney. And it’s not just Surt, Frigga is about to destroy Orkney too if Sam fails to get back Odin in the given time. That is what this book revolves around. That is what this book revolves around. Sam’s journey to bring back Odin, and oh, the ‘bad’ decisions he makes on the way. Keely and Leo’s journey to the frost giants to get allies and save the people from senseless war. And Howie, being the protector with this ridiculously amazing ideas.Out of all the three books in the series, this one is my favourite. It was enjoyable and adventurous and it felt so good, seeing the characters grow and develop and find out who they really are. This review is going to be short because I there isn’t a lot to talk about, I already talked about the world building and writing style in my reviews on the previous two books. I just wanted to tell you about the plot and how you should read this series if you are into Middle-Grade books and Mythology, especially Norse mythology. And I especially love the ending, the ending to the series. It was sweet and did actually bring me to tears and I can’t stress enough about how you guys should read the series.and the cover, it’s beautiful.Yes, I earlier though the cover of Kalifus Rising was the best, but now I’m having second thoughts cause I love the cover of this too. This might have turned out more of not-really-concise lines than a review, but I just completed the book yesterday and I just want to talk about the plot and the characters, but I don’t want to spoil you guys either. So, I’ll leave this here.

Book Review:Pre-Reading Thoughts:I really like this series. It is a fun middle grade series. I have definitely enjoyed reading about Sam and his group of friends. I loved that we got to see a but more of Keely, Howie and Leo in the last book. I am definitely intrigued to see where this book will go!Thank you so much to the author for providing me with a copy of her book! Just a small disclaimer for those reading this review. I have received this book in exchange for an honest review. Please note that this does not affect my opinion in any way. All thoughts are my ownWriting Thoughts:If you would like to see my opinions on the author's writing, you can find it here and here. One thing you should know before going into this book was that there are multiple point of views in this book! I liked the character's voice came across. The character sounded different from one another which really helped to differentiate the chapters.Plot Thoughts:The plot in this book was really good. It unfolded slowly but it didn't loose my interest. It was also interesting to see how each story connect towards the end. I definitely enjoyed how everything unfolded but felt like some scenes did drag out a little too long.Character Thoughts:The characters in this book were well developed but I felt as if they suffered in this book because we didn't get to see them a little more in depth. We sort of just brushed over the surface of all the characters. I was happy to see some new characters as well as some other characters getting a little more page time.Final Thoughts:Overall, this was a really great conclusion to a series. It was fun and interesting. The writing remained consistent and I liked how we were able to read from the perspective of more characters. The plot was slow but was still interesting. The story connected quite well at the end. I felt as though the characters suffered a bit in this book. I feel as though we have just scratched the surface but I was really happy to read more about other characters.Yours in Reading,Melleny

To say that I love this series is a gross understatement. Being the final entry in a series is a daunting task, which The Raven God lives up to expertly. From the very beginning, a series of events are laid out and planned creating a sense of dread and anxiety in the reader. As the protagonist, Sam, and his friends start feeling this anxiety, the reader can connect regardless of age, gender, nationality, or background. Let's face it, we all deal with trials which seem insurmountable, as if the gods themselves conspire against us.That connection between reader and character, I feel, is strongest in this third book than the previous. In each book, Sam must face a darker goal than challenges in the main story. In The Red Sun, it was a crisis of identity; who am I? In Kalifus Rising, it was the temptation of power and losing his identity. In The Raven God, it is the most biggest and longest standing fights we all struggle through; I can't do it. This mirror to a harsh struggle with depression and anxiety are hard to see in a young man and even more vicious seeing it in ourselves. With the final denouement, there is nothing I would like more than to go back and reread the whole series. To revisit Pilot Rock and the start of this journey knowing now how it all ties together, not as a part of a trilogy but as piece of a whole story.I eagerly await the next works from Alane Adams, and cannot wait to share these stories with my children as they grow up.
