I HIGHLY recommend this. I started studying for my GMAT with the normal practice problems and I noticed that my quick mental math was slow and I was making stupid mistakes (I'm currently an engineering student so this was even more frustrating to me than it should have been). So, after some research I posted this book and I'm so happy that I did. It's exactly what I need. It describes concepts so well and in multiple ways so regardless of how you learned it in grade school, it can re-teach you quickly. After it reviews a concept, it has basic practice problems and then solutions with descriptions so you can actually get quick feedback on your progression. This book has helped me so much with my mental math and has given me quick tricks and tips that I am now seeing make a difference since I am doing more full length practice problems now. BUY THIS BOOK, IT IS WORTH ITFrom: a previously struggling engineering student

I picked up a copy of this book prior to taking the GRE. I am a terrible math student, always have been, so I was quite happy (ok, maybe happy is the wrong word - I was... not as terrified) upon reading this book and finding it to be exactly as the title indicated. It takes you through, step by step, most of the old math problems and formulas in an easy-to-follow manner. I know it made a significant difference in improving my second attempt at the GRE, and was enough to get my score high enough to meet my university's requirements.I'd definitely recommend this for anyone who has been out of shool for awhile, isn't a natural math talent, and/or needs to improve their math scores - if only for the short term. In fact, I gave my copy to my sister for her GRE test and she mentioned this book had helped her, as well.Good luck on your test, whichever you're taking!

I used this in conjunction with the Cliff's review, Kaplan premier program, and the ETS book to study for the GRE. The ultimate math refersher and the Cliff's review are what helped me earn a high math score on the GRE. It was more helpful than I can even say in reviewing and teaching fundamentals, and was a key part of my success. The tricks that other study materials (e.g., kaplan and princeton review) teach take longer for me than just doing the math problems, but that means I really had to learn the math. This helped me do that with very few struggles and tears. I can't say enough good things about it--it was a fantastic resource, and I highly recommend it to anyone taking the GRE.

This book does a good job of showing you what will be on the test and gives some explanation for how to do it. However, I was so rusty I needed more explanation. I found the explanations in this book were quite confusion. What I did though, was pair this book with Practical Algebra, A Self-Teaching Guide and I was golden. I would use the other book to re-learn how to do something and then come back here to practice and get a good idea of how the GRE would phrase questions.

Exactly as described. I'm not good at math and it was easy to follow. I bought it as a way to learn/refresh for the GRE. I tackled this one first and then went on to the GRE book. Also a fun book to increase math skills for any age.

Unfortunately very basic but still hard to follow, omit too many details, vague writing.Only positive in regards to this book are page sizes they are huge.You won`t miss anything by skipping this book - use resources elsewhere.

This book DOES serve as a "general" math refresher for simple topics (arithmetic, basic geometry, basic algebra), however, do NOT rely solely on this book to study for the GRE math section. This book does NOT present problems indicative of GRE questions. Why does this matter? You can easily go through this book and get a false sense of security. Don't believe me? Go through this book, and then take a sample GRE test from the GRE website. The GRE does NOT test your ability to [directly] solve simple equations (as in this book). It assesses your ability to extrapolate pertinent facts (some obvious, some inferred) from a given problem, and derive a solution in [on average] less than one minute! You need to "practice" solving these types of problems, "using" the information in a book like this one as a basic tool set. It is as much a test about taking tests as it is about basic math. I also purchased Nova's review book, as well as Kaplans. Make sure to download all sample tests, etc from the official GRE website. in other words, diversify!

It has been 20 years since i got my undergrad degree. I needed the GREs to get into grad school and was told I needed a 550 on each portion. I was most worried about the math section so I bought this book. Wow. I forgot how much I had forgotten. After cruising through this book, I destroyed the math section on the GREs! There were some problems that were identical to the ones I had practiced on. My only regret...that I did not buy the similar book on the Comprehensive/English/Reading portion. While I ended up doing ok on that section, the results of this book really made a huge difference on the math portion. A great investment!
