Professor Cable's Alive At Work is an insightful and easy-to-read book. His conversational, engaging style makes the 170+ pages go quickly. Professor Cable distills complex aspects of neuroscience and applies them to the workplace--explaining much about why employees check out versus being engaged at work. He then offers examples of how to help "people love what they do." Message to employers--read this book.

Dan Cable gave a great talk on motivation and leadership when I attended the Accelerated Development Programme at London Business School this winter. On that basis I was really looking forward to reading "Alive at Work" when it came out in March.And I was surely not disappointed! The link between neuroscience and employee behaviour is very convincing and supported by numerous excellent examples. You finish this book wanting to approach your own leadership in a totally different way - finding ways to activate your employees seeking systems, clarifying "purpose" and listening to their ideas.The book is also easy and fun to read and difficult to put down when started.Highly recommended!

Dan helps us understand what we can do to create workplaces that not only acknowledge, but value, what it means to be human. He explains how we got to the place of forgetting just how important that is and helps us chart a course to make it happen - so many great pieces of advice and concrete tips for leaders, managers, and employees. Terrific read!

I was led to this by a short article in Harvard Business Review. It explains why and how peoples curiosity (the seeker element) is important to their well being and how it can be shut down by fear and stress. There are several cases studies of companies that have experimented in bringing the fun back into the workplace by supporting curiosity. It helps to understand what has and hasn't worked and why it doesn't just continue to work. I'm ordering seven copies for our department heads and we will using this tool to make our own business more fun. Guy Hanson

The book gets to the heart of a paradox that faces many organizations....how do you balance traditional structures of work with nontraditional structures of innovation/creativity. The book uncovers many "myths" about innovation and provides a useful "compass" for navigating complex frontiers of changing marketplaces and complex organizational life. A must read and a very creative perspective on emerging styles of effective leadership. Well done Dan!!

Some new things here for me: it highlights our innate seeking systems and focuses on how to better develop a mentality that honors it in everything you do. It’s a choice in being a good leader or teammate to bring people up or not - doing it authentically so it honors each persons unique ability to contribute raises everyone’s purpose.

A thoughtful examination of why we aren't engaged in our work and what we can do about it. Dan Cable's expertise comes through the book, not only through his great research and the research of others, but also through his storytelling. A fun read that can help leaders think about how to better motivate others and themselves.
