This is an inspiring book, and very readable: A young Jewish boy was one of the last to escape Hitler's takeover of Czechoslovakia, taken in by good-hearted Brits, eventually finding his way to the U.S. -- and spending the rest of a long life finding ways to be of community service, feeling he must have been spared to be of such use.

At first, I thought this book would recount a young Jewish boy's life during the war years only. However, I was treated to a lifelong memoir of a person driven to honor the gift of life granted to him by the bravery of his family and the sacrificial hospitality of strangers in a foreign country. Eloquently delivered.

This was a very interesting book. Ivan A. Backer's story was inspiring. For me, he personalized the effect of the Holocaust on the victims. I admire him for his attitude of gratitude that his life had been spared and his determination to make a difference with his work as an activist. I believe he did what he could to make the world a better place. He is a good example for the rest of us.

This is the story of World War II--sad but lucky but horrifying and poignant. A grateful survivor shares with us his history.

The author's life was saved by Nicholas Winton's Kindertransport as WWII was beginning. His many journeys by train as he moved to different residences during the war is contrasted to the train trips Jewish people were forced to take en route to the concentration camps. This man tells of a life in England and eventually the US as he grows up and tries to incorporate so many ideas and values into his search for what he should be doing in return for having his life saved. He converts to Christianity eventually and even becomes a Moravian Seminary student and then an Episcopal priest for a time. His search for the right path for his life and career is very absorbing.

Very little about escaping Nazism, more about life in England after his escape.

This was a most interesting read. it kept my attention to the end. I expected certain events tohappen, and they did not. It certainly made me wonder if it could have ended differently.

The book was a good read during the first half, but then it became full of unnecessary things about the author---hismarriages, etc and became boring to mepersonally.
