Review

"Readers interested in Canadian and American immigration history will appreciate the depth of Vermette’s research and the fascinating story he tells." —Publishers Weekly“David Vermette’s A Distinct Alien Race is an important study that goes well beyond just recounting an economic and social history of New England and Quebec. Vermette, an excellent and engaging writer/researcher, exposes an area of the past that has been somewhat dismissed and even discounted by both American and Quebec/Acadian historians who study the enormous French-speaking Canadian emigration from Quebec and the Maritimes to the textile industries of Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York from the 1840s to the 1930s.” —Sandra Stock, Quebec Heritage News“I was struck by the ease with which [Vermette] is able to organize data-dense material and interpret it into natural and compelling prose. As a non-fiction writer, he has a kind of narrative patience I greatly admire, an ability to make his argument with a light touch, through the strength of his research and writing rather than with explicit or bellicose assertions… [H]e is a persuasive and entertaining storyteller. A Distinct Alien Race is a great gift to those of us with Franco-American ancestry, and to other readers it offers a thorough introduction to a large but often invisible ethnic group that has shaped New England and the U.S. more generally.” —Abby Paige, https://abbypaige.com/2018/09/28/a-distinct-alien-race/ “Meticulously researched and overflowing with facts, yet so well written that it’s difficult to put down, the book tells a story few Americans are aware of.” —Emilie Noelle Provost, The Bean Magazine (Lowell, Mass.)"First, let me say simply that this is a terrific book, the best synthesis of Franco-American history written to date...Both the research and prose are wonderful...Everyone with an interest in Franco-Americans should read this book." —Leslie Choquette, Resonance

This book was very personal for me. My four grandparents emigrated to Maine from Quebec to work in factories around 1900. They settled in Brunswick, Maine which is the locale for a significant portion of this book. Both of my parents worked in the Cabot mill, described in the book, along with many of my uncles and aunts, some while still young teens. My parents continued there until the mill (now known as the Verney mill) shut down in 1955. I remember the economic devastation and uncertainty created by the closure. Vermette does a fantastic job of putting everything into historical perspective and describing the appalling conditions faced by the early Quebec immigrants. I highly recommend this book to anyone, even those who do not have French-Canadian ancestry, since the discrimination faced by immigrants is a universal story that continues to this day.

It is difficult to now where to begin in trying to convey my thanks to David Vermette for having written this book. As I read along, it was as if he had written a book about my own family. I have spent many years in genealogical work attempting to discover the mysteries of my family, yet this book supplied me the insight that allowed me to understand things that I had not considered. Why, for i stance, did my Great Great Grandfather serve as a soldier in the Union Army? I had always wondered why a French Canadian mill worker in Greenville, New Hampshire would make such a decision. The answer? Becasue he was unemployed, the mills having shut down as a result of a cotton shortage. His family had a member who served in the Revolutionary War in Col Moses Hazen's 2d Canadian Regiment...I wondered if...and when I looked at the list, there was my own family name staring at me. I had studied Canadian census forms over the years to discover the who, the where and the when, but never broadened my research to form a very good impression of the why. My ancestors came from the very places that he spoke about, from St. Hughes, from L'Islet, from Saint Jean Port Joli, and they came to mill towns in New Hampshire. The US census shows my great grandfather working in the mill at the age of ten which was a shock to me and then I saw that all the other families recorded on the same page, presumably neighbors, had children of similar ages all working the mills. My grandfather lost his right arm in a mill accident at the age of thirteen. My family was always bilingual, though that fact came about because we lived in France in the fifties because of government service, and whereas we spoke French 'continentally, my father spoke French with a Canadian accent, learned at home, where French was commonly spoken. His book travels many roads in great detail and though it focussed on the Main experience of his own family, that experience was duplicated throughout New England. Over they years I have visited Quebec in serch of the solutions to many mysteries of my heritage and by now I have solved most of them. This book has helped me understand my family's experience in a larger context. Stories my father told about "giving the KKK a load of buckshot in the ass" now make sense and also now ring true. The success my Great Grandfather had when he became a well-regarded local baker, earning the encomiums of his Protestant townsmen upon his death, is more meaningful to me as a huge step in our family's evolution towards becoming 'American'. When you read this book you will understand, truly, what being a 'French-Canadian" American is really all about. You will understand more about your family in the context of their broad experiences in leaving their lives in Quebec and coming and laboring in America than you would just by doing genealogy. This book will supply the 'why'. Read this book...please. Also my sixth-great grandmother, Marguerite Vermet, would have wanted me to write a few words in support of this wonderful well-written peach of a book.

Books with amazing details are not usually easy reading but Vermette's use of language and sentence structure gives life to all those details. Being of Franco-American descent, this book is especially pertinent. The history of the millions of Canadiens who came to New England after the Civil War is largely unknown. This book brings that period to life and chronicles the incredible hardships faced daily by the mill workers. Congratulations to David Vermette for producing such a valuable piece of American history. It fills many blanks that exist in our national story.

A forthright and entertaining history of a subject few of us are familiar with but one all of us should be. There is a striking parallel between the situation facing Franco Americans in New England at the end of the 19th Century and the story playing out on our southwestern border today. This book will be required reading in American history courses and a bedrock go-to source for future examinations of the Franco-American story.

I recently found out, through Ancestry, that I had a relative who was born to French-Canadian parents at the turn of the last century. I knew nothing about those people, about Catholic-Protestant relations, or about the history of Canadian settlement and immigration from there to the mills of New England. Franco-Americans were pretty invisible to me, growing up in Maryland, where the Poles, Germans, and Irish were more visible. This book, while very well-researched, is accessible to the average reader and draws enough parallels to current immigration issues to help place them in historical context. I would highly recommend this book!

As a descendant of French Canadian immigrants, I was unaware of the major hurdles they faced in the US because of their language and religion which set them apart. A fascinating and disturbing read that addresses the subject of immigration that resonates today.

Any Northeasterner of Quebecois heritage will find this book worth reading. We may want to grouse about our "tough lives", but this book reminds us that our problems are nothing compared to the challenges that our forbears faced. An excellent recounting of our great grandparents' and grandparents' challenges and triumphs by David Vermette. Thanks for this, David!

An excellent read. This book brings early New England mill towns to life. Covers a lot of ground quickly while giving you the relevant background. It appears well supported with research. This book pulled me in and taught me about the people that build these towns.
