One of the most gorgeous, informative books I've ever seen. Every page is glorious - whether it shows a close up of Charlemagne's crown or jewelry from King Tut's tomb. The photos are incredible. There is history, mystery, stories of curses, quotes from Shakespeare, lots and lots of royalty, and gems, jewelry, snuff boxes. Wonderful items you would never get to see in person. And then there is the science of gemology, the geology of how gems are formed in the earth, how the different cuts are made, and even how less-beautiful stones can be made more beautiful with radiation, chemical treatment, or repair. AMAZING. This is a very large coffee table book, but it isn't just photos. It's the Smithsonian Gem Room, the Crown Jewels and more. LOVE.

I want to start the review by saying that I enjoy what’s inside the book. I think the pictures are gorgeous, the content is great and overall well executed. However, I bumped off two stars because I am unhappy with how the outside of the book looks. The book is new, yet has a torn spine cover, smudges on the front cover, and red ink on the pages (pictures attached). Here’s my suggestion, if you order online then just order with caution, but if you can,- I would recommend buying this book in person to ensure you get a clean- looking book. I will keep it the book because I’m kind of nerdy about gems.

Absolutely stunning and a wealth of info.... even for the top notch jeweler. Book arrived larger than I had anticipated (I was going to take it on the place and read it on my next trip) but its too big. That being said its absolutely beautiful and I just love paging through it and getting inspiration. Its nice to go back every now and then and get "schooled" on why you became enthralled in this trade every now and then. :)

My son (12 at the time) loves rocks and stones so when he saw this at B&N he was thrilled but I wasn't thrilled about the $50 price tag. I found it on here instead for much less, he decided to buy it with his giftcard. The whole family loves looking at this book. The pictures are beautiful and we love reading about the gems.

An excellent & large book with easy to understand information for anyone - not just a gemologist like me. Another great addition to my library.you can always count on any "D.K" published book to be well illustrated and accurate - a librarians favorite publisher.

This is the perfect book for gem lovers who want to learn more about geology and sources of rocks as well as select history of important historical gems. I only wish the actual dimensions of the pieces had been given next to their photographs.

This is a very high quality table top book that is loaded with breathe taking photos and good information. My copy looked as if it had been dropped on it's corners but that was understood when I purchased it and the reduced price was well worth it. Aside from the noticeable albeit minor cover damage, the content was in prime condition and before I knew it an hour flew by has I got lost in it's pages. If you are a geologist or just like looking a fascinating Gems and Minerals I cannot recommend this book enough.
