When Kate & Brett were married, her parents wouldn't attend their wedding. They believed Brett wasn't good enough for their daughter. They were married only a few months when Brett was deployed the first time. Kate discovered she was pregnant soon after, but was so young that she let her mom make decisions for her. Kate didn't tell Brett they were expecting. Instead, she sent a letter telling him she wanted a divorce. Her mom moved Kate to the family estate. Brett was devastated that Kate wanted a divorce & didn't understand what had happened. After several deployments, Brett ends up working on his Captain's family horse ranch. Throughout the seven years, he's tried to find Kate to no avail. When Kate travels to find Brett, her only goal is to introduce him to their son, Reid, & then move to CA for a job. Is there any way they can forgive each other? What's the real reason Kate has found him? This is a book that shows how forgiveness frees us to get on with our lives, as God tells us.
How have I not read anything by Liz Isaacson before now? Yikes! I have a lot of reading to catch up.:)I don’t typically choose to read books where the characters are married, but the cover spoke to me and the blurb intrigued. I didn’t like Kate in the beginning. Never really got her. Like why she asked Brett for a divorce. Why she chose to stay silent about Reid. Why she stuck around and took abuse from a patronizing mother. I mean, she was an adult, why didn’t she just take her son and live on her own? I didn’t understand some of her choices, especially toward the end.“Kate felt utterly alone, like she was the only woman stupid enough to make such colossal mistakes.â€Yep. We’ve all been there, haven’t we? So, Kate’s love and devotion to her son, Reid, and her willingness to take a job and stay on the ranch just so Brett could get to know Reid, redeemed her. Brett, on the other hand…“She’d loved the danger in his eyes. The years had changed him, and though his eyes were still pools of ebony, they held more wisdom now. The same passion, but curbed with patience and maturity.â€He’s been through three deployments already, suffers from PTSD and a fear of sand. Horses calm him, and he’s found a sense of peace at Three Rivers Ranch. When Kate shows up and shatters his balance, I couldn’t blame him for wrestling with forgiveness. Even so, he’s kind and sweet and really good with Reid. What a hero! Especially when he…yikes, I can’t give that away! You’ll have to read the book.:)I appreciated the insight from the letters and emails, but toward the end, I felt like they took over the story. The faith thread was subtle, not overpowering or preachy, and the romance the perfect balance of speak and sizzle. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Fourth and Long. Now, I’m off to find more romances in the Three Rivers Ranch series!“The Lord speaks to each of us differently,†he said.“Does He?†She wished her voice didn’t sound quite so desperate, quite so unsure. But she wasn’t sure God heard or answered her prayers.Disclaimer: I purchased my own copy of this book. I was in no way compensated and this is my fair and unbiased review. ~Dora Hiers, Fiction Faith & Foodies Blog
Fourth and Long is a Christian Romance and the theme will pull at your heartstrings. Brett and Kate were married, and he went off to perform his obligation in the military. While he is gone, she asks for a divorce. The story starts off with Kate and her son on their way to California. Brett is back from overseas and working at a ranch. Little does he know that he has a seven-year-old son until Kate arrives to have him sign divorce papers and have him meet his son. There is one little catch. Kate will inherit her mother's estate if she can prove she is divorced or that she has a happy marriage to Brett. What do you think will happen when he meets his son? The letters that were inserted didn't always relate to the chapters, but they did relate to the story. The story moved a little slow in places, and I found myself skimming to a section that was more interesting. The author offers the reader a beautiful ending. 3.5 Stars Read with KU
I am reading the series although I started with #4 and had to catch up. I have difficulties with the Kate character *SPOILER ALERT* I really don't understand how quickly she filed for divorce and then how she refused to let Brett know he had a son. Seven years is a long time. I also couldn't quite figure out her mother. She seemed controlling and snobbish but then the terms of her will left open the possibility of Brett and Kate continuing their marriage. I liked all the characters but Kate I guess. I was glad to see that Brett had a hard time forgiving her. I would too. There are still typos and please get the 'it's vs its' and the 'I' vs 'me' usage correct. Hard to believe the author has written so many stories but makes these very basic mistakes. That said I do like most of the characters and the setting. I even found a horse treatment center like that in my area and plan to check it out. I might need a little equine therapy!
